LONDON UK 25 November 2021- Talent development, education, and investment in future generations around the world are at the core of PETRONAS’ latest initiative. For the first time, the company builds a bridge between Malaysia and Italy with the aim of inspiring students to follow in the footsteps of En De Liow, the young engineer who is behind the successes of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI), the division of PETRONAS that manufactures and markets lubricants and functional fluids globally, organised its first-ever virtual masterclass on its seven-time Formula One Constructors’ Championship-winning Fluid Technology Solutions™.
The exclusive lecture, chaired by En De Liow, a PETRONAS Trackside Fluid Engineer and one of the youngest success stories from the PETRONAS Global Talent Search training and selection programme. For the past two years, Liow has been an invaluable member in the PETRONAS Trackside Lab – the mobile fluid analysis laboratory within the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS (MAMGP) Formula One Team.
This event is part of PLI’s strategic initiative to invest in new talents who will lead the future of motorsports and mobility. The programme involved students from the University of Southampton, Malaysia, and more than 60 Italian students from technical institutes throughout Italy involved in the GMedu training programme, through which PLI provides training to young people all over the country.
"We are thrilled to share this unique training opportunity that virtually connects Malaysia and Italy. This programme embodies PETRONAS' desire to create diverse and multitalented teams. We believe that diversity unlocks innovation and creativity on a larger scale – both of which are key to PETRONAS' success on tracks and roads around the world," said Domenico Ciaglia, Managing Director EMEA, PLI.
"En De Liow will be an inspirational figure for Malaysian and Italian students who dream of becoming excellent mechanics and engineers, and, who one day, we hope, will be able to work alongside living legends like the drivers of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team."
In the lecture, Liow shared his personal experience working trackside and the secrets behind PETRONAS’ famed Fluid Technology Solutions, exposing young students to the triumphs and challenges of being part of a sport that pushes the boundaries of technology. Through the inaugural event, PLI hopes to inspire the future generation, opening their minds to the opportunities for a rewarding career that this industry provides.
For PETRONAS, achieving this success is the culmination of a global effort in research, development and continuous improvement that starts in the classroom and continues with the selection and training of technicians and engineers who work tirelessly at the brand’s EMEA Headquarters, the PETRONAS Research & Technology Center in Santena, Turin.
This team of professionals, of which Liow is a part of, works alongside Mercedes’ engineers and supports the team by bringing innovative Fluid Technology Solutions™, which is then offered to the PETRONAS customers who rely on the quality fluids and oils. This has resulted in one of the brand’s most successful ranges, PETRONAS Syntium, the same oil that runs through the veins of the cars driven by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.
This special lesson was attended by the following Italian high schools: Institute Newton Varese (VA), Institute Ipsia Giovanni Giorgi Verona (VR), Institute Enzo Ferrari Monza (MB), Institute Ferrari Modena (MO), Institute Cfp Piombello Bisuschio (VA), Institute Ascanio Sobrero Casale Monferrato (AL), Institute Scarpa Mattei San Donà di Piave (VE), Institute Cnos Fap Salesiani Sesto San Giovanni (MI), Institute IPSIA Leonardo da Vinci Matera (MT).
